Style on a budget
(cool hotels for less than €150 a night)
"The Thomas d'Aquin is proof that you can find style on a budget in even the best parts of Paris.

This street, once a meadow where young men met for duels, is a tranquil enclave near the shops of St-Germain, Rive Gauche antiques dealers and the Musée d'Orsay. With its cosseting salon, jungle of plants concealing the entrance and courteous welcome, there's something incredibly civilised about this place.

Although the 18th-century building has been a hotel for over a century, the blend of calm, contemporary lines and Napoleon III-plush makes it feel more like a private house.

Most of the 21 bedrooms are small, but owner Bertrand Plasmans has given to each the same attention to detail he lavished on his opulent Hôtel Saint Vincent next door, preserving the panelled doors and ceiling mouldings, mixing damasks, velvets and tweeds in the bed throws and curtains, and adding attractive desks, flat-screen TV and framed prints. Bathrooms are small but pristine with lovely details such as Roger & Gallet soaps.

ROOM TO BOOK 206, over the entrance, which is the only one with a balcony.
